Wall-O-Cans

When finding space for storage, Space efficiency and Convenient Access are the two biggest problems.  To help conquer these issues, we developed this storage unit that provides both space efficiency and easy access to the stored food.

This "Wall-O-Cans" is designed to store canned goods with just a few inches against the wall.  To maximize the use of space, cans are stored from floor to ceiling.  It looks big, but actually takes only a small part of a room.  (We have our unit against the wall of our home office.  When covered by a drape, it's hardly noticed.)

This is the perfect way to store canned goods.  It is a relatively large storage unit but is designed to lay flat against the wall for space efficiency so it actually takes very little space.

Just put the cans in at one end, and extract them at the other.  It's the perfect first in, first out canned food storage shelf unit.  If you have a food storage system or if you just don't like running to the store when you need something, build one of these.

Construction :  Moderate - Requires metal cutting, drilling and welding.  Some pieces may be fabricated by a local sheet metal shop.

Although it obviously holds more than usually needed, the number of shelves became is an interesting design point.  In counting the things to store, the number of different items may surprise you.

For us, when we included several varieties of canned fruit, vegetables, soups, baking supplies, tuna, etc.., (and variations of those items - like pineapple chunks, rings and crushed) we have 30 different items!  We very rarely have a shelf full, but the convenience of easy storage, automatic rotation and efficiency is wonderful.

Building the unit requires a moderate skill level - metal cutting and welding is required - though it's easy to have a local sheet metal shop make some of the more challenging pieces.  (That's what I did.)

Storage unit is approx. 7 ft. high, 14 inches wide, and 7 ft. long.  It is intended to fit against a spare wall of a room so it doesn't take much space.  The height and length can be easily modified as needed.  It can also be made as one shelf width configuration to better accommodate your individual needs.  (For convenience in getting it into the house and through doorways - and for weight, the unit comes appart half way up.)
