A Strong, Stable and Versatile Utility Trailer

What makes a good utility trailer?  Why are some trailers stable while others wander all over the road?

Synthesis Engineering presents a trailer design that provides excellent strength, on road stability and useful versatility.  If you want an awesome utility trailer, these plans are a great place to start!

Several Options Shown

A great utility trailer starts with design fundamentals:

  • Overall Strength
  • Towing Stability
  • Versatility - to accommodate different load requirements - motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATV's furniture, junk, and more.
  • Flexibility - to adjust to varying hauling requirements.

This trailer design has it !

For Strength and simplicity, the trailer is built from standard steel beams and angles with appropriate triangulation for rigidity, and load capacity up to 3500 lbs*.

For dynamic Towing Stability, the design incorporates the fundamentals with options for Flexibility -- like a floating axle (can be adjusted for differing load requirements) and a long tongue for proper vehicle spacing and maneuverability.

Design Versatility is accomplished with options like a hide-away ramp and infinitely variable tie-down placement.  Add-on accessories like motorcycle stands bolt in place, then come off easily when not in use.

Finally, Flexibility is achieved with lots of design variations.  Axle options allow bed height to be set higher or lower.  Items like sides, a top, a tailgate, ramps, toolbox mounting, and flexible tie-down points can be added.

Construction :  Requires metal working skills like cutting, drilling & welding.  See plan contents.

Utility Trailer Technical Information:

  • Trailer bed size is slightly larger than 5 ft. wide x 10 ft. long.
  • Overall length including the tong is 181 inches.
  • Trailer bed height will depend on design options chosen and will range from 16 inches up.  (Bed height shown is a low 18")
  • Max capacity (depending on options) is 3500 lbs.* including the trailer.
  • Trailer weight will vary depending on design options, but will range from 650 lbs up.

If you would like to build this trailer, complete, easy to follow, fully illustrated plans can be ordered here.  For more info on the plans, learn about What makes our Trailer Plans better?

* Load capacity is dependent on axle, component and material options.  It is also highly dependent on materials used, construction techniques, assembly methods and proper load application.  Load capacity does not include capacities for purchased parts such as the hitch, chain, axle, etc..  Do not exceed manufactures limits.  Always use caution, proper safety equipment and tie downs when loading and towing a trailer.
