Like all our trailers, this one is designed for Strength, on road Stability,
and great Functionality.
A great trailer starts with the design:
- Overall Strength
- Towing Stability
- Design Functionality
For Strength and simplicity, the trailer uses standard steel beams with triangulation for rigidity. It is strong, by design,
starting at the frame.
Towing Stability is achieved by adhering to design fundamentals, and by proper construction. The Plans have the right design
for easy to follow construction. |
By Design this trailer is intended to carry as much as possible, yet be easy to use. The 4-up canoes use space effectively so
the top canoes are not too high. The trailer is long enough to carry 12 canoes but is as short as practical for proper vehicle spacing and maneuverability.
For Storage, 2 optional cabinets are designed to use available space on the frame. One opens from the top, the other (at the back)
opens with a door. These make it easy to access the equipment even when canoes are on. Add a latch for security and a tarp for cover, and the trailer
serves as an off season storage rack.
The storage box plans are designed for standard sized equipment, but they can be modified to meet your particular size requirements.
Everything you need -- a list of materials, suggestions, sources, instructions -- all included in the trailer plans.
Plans include options for customization, a full list of materials, suggested parts and sources,
complete illustrated instructions, full detailed drawings, (and more . . . ).
Canoe Trailer Plans Technical Information:
- Overall trailer length including the tongue is 26 ft. (Does not include boats.)
- Overall trailer width including the canoes and rack is approximately 8 ft. 6 inches. (Check local laws for width constraints.)
- Overall trailer height will depend on design options but may be 8 ft. 6 inches without boats. (Slightly higher when 4-up boats are loaded.)
(Note: A step stool may be required to access the top boat.)
- Trailer bed height will depend on design options chosen and will range from 16 inches up.
(Standard height is a 20 inches at the hitch.)
- Dimensions may vary slightly with construction techniques.
- Trailer is designed to carry a maximum of 12 canoes or kayaks, each up to 18 foot length. Boats are fastened via straps to tie-down loops welded on the frame. Your
choice of straps (rope, bungees, tie-downs, etc.) will effect the security of the boats during transit. Please secure them carefully.
- Max load capacity depends on the axle option chosen, and includes the trailer weight.
- Several options are included with each set of plans to provide a wide variety of function. Some options are mutually exclusive. Not all options are shown in the pictures here.
- Trailer weight will depend on the options chosen, however, if done complete, empty trailer weight is likely to be 1500 lbs.
The loaded trailer will be much more. Please be sure your tow vehicle can handle these loads.

* Trailer load capacity is dependent on axle(s), components and material options used. It is also
highly dependent on materials, construction techniques, assembly methods and proper load application -- and includes
the weight of the trailer. Load capacity does not include capacities for purchased parts such as the hitch, chain,
springs, axles, tires, etc.. Do not exceed manufactures limits. Always use caution, proper safety equipment
and tie downs when loading and towing a trailer.
